Mason may be large but we also pride ourselves on being a welcoming and accepting community. After all, we’ve all been the newbie at some point and know it can sometimes feel overwhelming. But give it a little time. Before you know it, you’ll be a full-fledged Patriot.

Virginia’s largest public research university is named after him. Yet few people are aware that George Mason IV, the patriot who wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights, was also a slaveholder at his plantation, Gunston Hall, less than 20 miles from the Fairfax Campus. A research project led by History Department faculty members, Wendi Manuel-Scott and Benedict Carton, enabled undergraduate researchers to delve into the untold story of the enslaved children, women and men at Gunston Hall. Funded by OSCAR, the Enslaved Children of George Mason project confronts a dark period in our history, using evidence to illuminate the lives of people who have, until now, only existed in archaeological ruins and old documents.

It’s easy to get distracted during the holidays with so much going on. But if we take a moment to slow down and catch our breath, we realize that the best gifts don’t necessarily come in a box, but rather they come from the heart. This season, be thankful, be joyful, be giving.
